Brief Description of the Project: As part of the Civic Hackathon project, which is implemented by the Community Development and Continuing Education Institute in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and Family Health International (fhi360) within the framework of the Civil Participation and Community Engagement Project (CPCE) funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Civic Hackathon project aims to contribute to strengthening the role of social accountability committees and youth councils in decision-making processes by implementing community initiatives to address obstacles to social inclusion and gender equality in the less fortunate communities in the southern West Bank. Responsive community initiatives have been implemented to address community needs identified and agreed upon by active stakeholders in the local community, and this initiative was one of them.

Initiative Summary:

  • Location: Sikka
  • Implementation Date: May 25, 2023- July 15,2023
  • Executors: Youth Committee/ Sikka
  • Problem and Intervention: The initiative was based on pressuring decision-makers to take responsibility for the village of Sikka in the city of Dura. The area faces several problems, as identified in a quick participatory research report. Accordingly, the priority was placed on addressing the issue of infrastructure in the village. The group worked on implementing a pressure and advocacy campaign on the matter, focusing on a series of videos and meetings, including an accountability session with decision-makers to shed light on the issue.

     Main activities/outputs

  • Designing a video about the problem of the streets in the village and its negative impact on road users, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance.
  • Holding a public meeting to introduce and discuss the idea preliminarily with local community institutions and residents in the village during a workshop (30-50 participants).
  • Conducting a pressure and advocacy campaign (digital and non-digital) to raise awareness about the problem. This includes regular posts about the issues of the streets in the village, their negative effects on road users, and the importance of regular maintenance.
  • Accountability session (meeting with stakeholders) regarding the infrastructure issue with the village council, Ministry of Public Works, Ministry of Local Government, and the Joint Services Council (10-12 participants).
  • Establishing a follow-up committee for the recommendations and decisions made during the accountability session.
